阅读散记

一段时间以来所听所看到的一些东西。

1. NYTimes 最近的”Darwinism Must Die So That Evolution May Live”中有一句是 The ninth-century Buddhist master Lin Chi said, “If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.” 这就是中文的“佛挡杀佛”。不过英译完全没有“挡”的意思在，倒像是教人做无差别杀人狂，路见行人便下手。

1. 通俗作品中的 Freedom 两则 The Carpenters 有一首歌”Desperado”（也许是翻唱 Eagles的 ），其中有两句歌词如下： “And freedom, oh freedom well, thats just some people talkin. You’re a prisoner walking through this world all alone.” 在 Willa Cather 的代表作 “O, Pioneer” 中， Willa 借男主角之口说： “Freedom so often means that one isn’t needed anywhere.”

2. 石黑一雄的小说”The Remains of Day”，简中译本中把 facts of life 译作“生活的基本知识”，实际原文是隐语，是云雨之事的意思。翻译的到不能说是错，但是“隐”得多少让人摸不着头脑，我估计没有看过英文原词的人，读到这里时完全不会意识到这里的意思。
